Michael Kan was an early supporter of, and collaborator with, Great Leap. During the 1980s, he was based in Portland, Oregon and he organized a large Asian Pacific American festival that featured a performance of [Chop Suey].
In 1976-77, Michael Kan founded (with Alan Osaki) the Asian American Student Union (AASU), now known as APASU, at the University of Oregon in Eugene. Through his social justice work, he learned about Great Leap and created a strong link to the Pacific Northwest.
