Charlie Chin is a singer, songwriter, storyteller, community historian, and activist. Born and raised in New York City, he has lived in the California Bay Area for much of his life. He joined Nobuko Miyamoto and Chris Iijima in A Grain of Sand in the 1970s and also performed in the revival concerts in the 1990s. He participated in the California Council for the Humanities' Chautauqua Program, "History Alive!," portraying Dr. Yee Fung Cheung, a Chinese herbalist who arrived in California in 1850. He has written several children's books on Asian American themes. He directed the San Mateo Buddhist Temple Taiko group for many years. In 2009, he was Artist-in-Residence for the Chinese Historical Society of America and performed a one-man show, Uncle Toisan, for many audiences, totaling over 8,000 people. The play told the story of an immigrant who entered the US as a 17-year-old paper son who lives to witness the lifting of the Chinese Exclusion Act, the Civil Rights movement, the Vietnam War, and the Asian American Movement.
